CoverGirl TruBlend & TruMagic 1st Impression Review

January 26, 2014

Hey Beauty Bugs,

It was a sincere attempt not to purchase any products during the month of January, however, I have fallen short twice. Fortunately, my weakness didn’t hurt my pockets because I spent no more than $10 for both items mentioned in this blog post. Thanks to CVS I had about $8 worth of Extrabucks. #winning Apparently this line of products is a re-launch with a brand new look and more new shades for medium and deep skin tones. Let me say, “Thank Goodness”, this drugstore brand is starting to understand the importance of creating more shades to accommodate women of all colors. Well done, CoverGirl!

CoverGirl TruBlend Foundation (D5 & D4)

I initially grabbed the shade D5 but the undertone just did not match me too well and I could definitely tell the difference. The good thing about this foundation is that even if it’s not the exact match for your skin, it blends in so well that you can get away with it. After browsing the CVS store a week after my initial purchase, I was curious to see if the shades lighter and darker than D5 would be a better match. The shade D5 undertone was just too cool for my taste.

The shade D6 had way too much red undertones for my skin. But D4 was a dead-on match, although looking at the bottle, the foundation appears way too light for me. I swatched my chin and jawline in the store, which usually has discoloration, and it did not give off the “ghostly effect” which meant it was a perfect shade.

I took it home and was still in shock of how well this foundation blends into my skin. I recorded a video of my first time applying this particular shade to my entire face, which I will include at the end of this post. My first impression of the CoverGirl TruBlend foundation is that it is a total winner, and I will probably use this as an everyday foundation. I’ll reserve my final thoughts in a few weeks of use but here are some notes of observation.

Coverage: Light and can build to medium if you use a powder foundation on top.
Shine Control: Nothing out of the ordinary. I only had to blot once but the shine wasn’t really bad.
Long-wear: Yes, a little more than a full workday.
Blendability: Phenomenal. Outstanding. So on and so forth.

CoverGirl TruMagic Skin Perfector

Source: CoverGirl.com

The TruMagic Skin Perfector is an, “Ok” product. It’s not bad but it’s not extraordinary. It’s not so average that I would return it because I feel as if there are some benefits to make it work well for me. However, I do feel I would need to use this product during the Winter and Spring versus the Summer months. My guess is that the TruMagic Skin Perfector would not hold up well in the humid and hot months.

Wearing Over Makeup
When using TruMagic I chose to use my fingers, simply because you will rub your makeup off when using the sponge provided. Although it sounds a bit messy to use my fingers, I did not experience a big mess. The drawbacks of using over your makeup: (1) possibly rubbing off too much makeup, (2) using your fingers instead of the sponge, and (3) short-lived shine control.

CoverGirl TruMagic definitely mattifies the areas where applied but it seems to last only for an hour. After that time, the shine shows through even more, or at least it appears that it does.

Wearing Underneath & Alone
I prefer using it underneath my makeup rather than over my makeup. That seems to be a really good option. The shine seems less noticeable using it that way. I am curious to try this product by itself without any makeup. More details on different ways to use in my final review. For now, I think this is a great makeup base rather than a touch-up product.

Overall I’m not really disappointed with both products. I’m more impressed with the TruBlend foundation than I am with the TruMagic balm but both are worth grabbing in your local drugstores. To be fair, I’ll be sure to use the TruMagic in various ways with different foundations to give a more thorough explanation of best use. Until next time…

Love God. Love Yourself. Love Family.
